The McGill Sports Hall of Fame was inaugurated in 1996

McGill possesses a rich history of organized sports dating back to the 1860s. The school, its students, and coaches figure prominently in the origins and development of hockey, basketball, and football, and continue to be major players in the national and international sports scene.

In 1996, with help from Meloche Monnex and the Martlet Foundation, McGill’s Sports Hall of Fame was established to recognize outstanding athletes, teams, and builders responsible for McGill’s continued excellence in sports.

Hall of Fame Selection Process & Nomination Categories

The selection of the most outstanding athletes, teams, and builders from any era is a challenging one. Therefore, the Selection Committee has established certain eligibility guidelines. Candidates will be considered for induction only after a 10-year absence from the varsity program. The Committee welcomes participation and feedback from class leaders, class agents, alumni sports groups, branches of the McGill Alumni Association, and any other individual. Nomination categories are as follows:

I. Athlete

The athlete's intercollegiate contribution to athletics at McGill should be the primary criteria for nomination, since this is a university-based program. Secondary factors to be considered include the athlete¹s achievements in provincial, national, and international competition. Athletes become eligible for induction 10 years after their last season.

II. Team

The intercollegiate performance and contribution of the team should be the primary criteria for nomination. Secondary factors to be considered are non-intercollegiate competition and contribution to sport in general. Teams become eligible for induction 10 years after thier season.

III. Builder

This category includes members of the University community, such as coaches, administrators, and support staff, who have made a significant contribution to athletics at McGill. Builders are eligible for induction at any time.

Nomination Process

Nominations can be submitted at any time prior to March 31 for the same induction year, with the official induction luncheon scheduled for Homecoming Week in the fall. Nominations will remain active for a minimum period of three years.
