Robin Ruggiero was born July 17, 1966 and raised in Anjou, Que. She graduated from McGill with a commerce degree in 1990 and merited the Scarlet Key Award for dedication towards the improvement of student life on campus. A freestyle and butterfly specialist who swam with the McGill Martlets from 1986 to 1990, she led the team to a pair of conference titles and struck gold a dozen times at the Quebec university championships. She was an annual qualifier for the CIAU nationals where she claimed two gold medals in the 100-metre butterfly, in addition to one silver and a bronze in other events.
Ruggiero received three Quebec Foundation bursaries for athletic excellence, including female athlete-of-the-year honours in 1987. A three-time Quebec conference all-star, she merited All-Canadian status twice and established a half-dozen school records, in the 200, 400 and 800-metre freestyles, the 100 and 200 butterflys and 4x200 free relay. She won numerous gold medals swimming for Canada from 1984 to 1987, adding a pair of silvers and a bronze at the 1987 PanAm Games in Indianapolis and bronze at the 1985 world university FISU Games in Kobe, Japan.
