  • Bio:

The 1936-37 men's hockey squad, which went 10-0 to capture the International Intercollegiate Ice Hockey League championship, was inducted into the McGill Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.

The 1936-37 Redmen hockey team competed in three separate leagues and finished first in each, with a combined overall record of 25-4-2, outscoring opponents by a 173-52 margin.

They won the Queen’s Cup championship of the Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey Union, in addition to the Alexis Thompson Trophy as champions of the International Intercollegiate Ice Hockey League.

In the seven-team Quebec Senior Hockey League, the Redmen racked up a 12-2-2 record, outscoring opponents 61-30.

In the four-team CIHU, McGill finished with a 6-0 record, outscoring opponents 41-11. They went 10-0 in the six-team IIIHL, outscoring opponents 87-16, and still remain the last McGill hockey team to go undefeated in intercollegiate play.

They established a number of single-season records which stood for over five decades, including most wins (25), longest undefeated streak at home (12-0-1) and most games scoring 10-or-more goals (5). They also had had a 22-game undefeated streak (21-0-1), one short of the school record.

Offensively, they were unstoppable and defensively, they equaled a McGill record for most shutouts in a season with six. On Jan. 4, 1937, the team set another record (which still stands as McGill’s largest winning margin and most consecutive goals in a game) by defeating the New York St. Nicks hockey club 16-0.

The Redmen were guided by legendary coach Dr. Bobby Bell.

Other members included captain Gordon Crutchfield, his brother Dr. Bruce Crutchfield, plus Ron Perowne, Alec Duff, Paul Pidcock, Clayton "Bing" Crosby, Russ McConnell, Jean-Paul Elie, Dr. Rollie Lamb, Dr. Cam Dickison, Howie Walker, Dr. Cliff MacKay, Gord Meiklejohn, G. Ian Craig and Allen Hall, plus goaltenders Dave Tennant (starter) and Dr. Ashton Emerson.

    TEAM

The 1936-37 Redmen hockey team competed in three separate leagues -- finishing first in each -- and had a combined overall record of 25-4-2, outscoring opponents by a 173-52 margin. Under the guidance of legendary coach Dr. Bobby Bell, they won the Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey Union's Queen's Cup championship and the Alexis Thompson Trophy as champions of the International Intercollegiate Ice Hockey League.

In the seven-team Quebec Senior Hockey League, they finished first with a 12-2-2 record, outscoring opponents 61-30. They finished first in six-team IIIHL, with a 10-0-0 record, outscoring opponents 87-16.  It was a formidible league back then, which included Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Toronto, Queen's and Montreal.  That Redmen squad still remains the last McGill hockey team to go undefeated in intercollegiate play. In the four-team CIHU, McGill finished first with a 6-0 record, outscoring opponents 41-11.

They had a 22-game undefeated streak (21-0-1), one short of the team record.  The 25 wins established by that squad was a team record, which stood for 52 years until the 1988-89 Redmen won 26 but with seven more games played. Defensively, led by goaltender Dave Tennant, the 1936-37 team equaled a McGill record for most shutouts in a season with six, allowing two goals (or less) 16 times in 31 games.  They also posted a 13-game undefeated streak at home (12-0-1), a mark which stood for 52 years until it was tied in 1988-89.

Offensively, they were unstoppable, scoring 10 (or more) goals in a game five times, a mark that stood for 53 years.  On Jan. 4, 1937, they set another mark by defeating the New York St. Nicks hockey club 16-0, which still stands as a record for McGill's largest winning margin and most consecutive goals in a game. On Feb. 17, 1937, the Redmen featured another first when four players scored hat-tricks in a 16-1 versus Dartmouth.

Other team members included captain Gordon Crutchfield, his brother Dr. Bruce Crutchfield, plus Ron Perowne, Alec Duff, Paul Pidcock, Clayton "Bing" Crosby, Russ McConnell, Jean-Paul Elie, Dr. Rollie Lamb, Dr. Cam Dickison, Howie Walker, Dr. Cliff MacKay, Gord Meiklejohn, G. Ian Craig, Allen Hall, plus goaltender Dr. Ashton Emerson.
