  • Bio:

Edmund (Ted) Joseph Behan was born in Pembroke, Ont., on July 12, 1894 and graduated with a medical degree in 1922. A prolific scorer, who was one of the first superstars of his era, he played five seasons for the hockey Redmen from 1916 to 1922. Behan was the first McGill player to reach the 100-goal plateau and ended his university career with 107 goals and 14 assists in 69 games overall. Some eight decades later, he still ranks as the third-leading sniper in McGill history. In 1919-20, Behan notched a single-season school record of 29 goals in 17 games and set another school mark with five hat-tricks. His most outstanding single-game performance was a five-goal effort in a playoff win over Loyola on March 7, 1918. Behan also tallied four goals in a game on four other occasions. He served two stints as team captain (1917-18 and 1920-21), led McGill to a pair of Montreal City Hockey League championships (1918, 1921) as well as the Quebec Amateur Hockey Association title in 1920-21. He served with the First Quebec Regiment during the First World War and later had a very successful career as an obstetrician in the United States. He died at the age of 78 on Oct. 6, 1973 in New Haven, Conn.
