Ann-Sophie Bettez, was born on Oct. 14, 1987 in Sept-Iles, Que. She graduated from McGill in 2011 with a commerce degree, majoring in marketing, entrepreneurship and organizational behaviour, followed by a certificate in public relations (2012).
Nicknamed "Ann-So", the 5-foot-4 centre tallied 148 goals and 323 points in 196 games overall, concluding a brilliant university career as McGill's all-time leader in goals, assists and points. In regular season play, she posted an equally impressive 85-87-172 record in 91 contests.
Bettez was one of only six athletes in McGill history to earn All-Canadian honours five times in the same sport. She joined a select group that includes cross-country runner Linda Thyer (1990-1994), basketball forward Vicky Tessier (1992-1997), track and field distance runner Sarah Ali-Khan (1997-2003), volleyball player Jennifer Thomson (2005-2010) and hockey goaltender Charline Labonté (2006-2012).
Recruited out of Dawson College, Bettez started her university career off with a bang, being voted the nation's top freshman in 2007-08. The following year, she was named League MVP as a sophomore after establishing RSEQ single-season records in goals, assists and points with a 24-30-54 total in just 18 conference games. In her fifth year at McGill, she served as an alternate captain and was selected League MVP again.
It proved to be a dream 2011-12 season for Bettez, who merited the holy trinity of major awards, with the Bob Brodrick Trophy as Canadian university women's hockey player of the year, the Gladys Bean Trophy as McGill's female athlete of the year and the BLG Award as the nation's top university female athlete.
Bettez guided the Martlets to a national championship tourney appearance in each of her five years, including gold medal victories in 2008, 2009 and 2011. She was also a key member of the CIS all-star squad that captured gold at the 2011 world university FISU Winter Games in Turkey.
After graduation, she joined the Montreal Stars (later renamed Les Canadiennes) of the Canadian Women's Hockey League and won the league's rookie-of-the-year honours in 2012-13. The following season, she received the Angela James Bowl as the league's top scorer and was named as the CWHL player of the year.
In 2017, Bettez helped guide Montreal to the Clarkson Cup national championship. After her eight seasons with Montreal, she ranked second (behind Caroline Ouellette) among the CWHL's lifetime points leaders with a lofty 127-152-279 record in 189 regular season contests.
Bettez also scored one goal and added two assists in the CWHL all-star game in January, 2019.
Her first experience with Hockey Canada was at a selection camp in 2007 and she was part of the under-22 development program in 2008, 2009 and 2010. She helped the national team win bronze at the 2019 IIHF world championship in Finland and also suited up for Canada in the 2021 Rivalry Series against the USA.
She is currently a financial planner at IG Wealth Management.
