Hall of Fame
Wendy Whelan was inducted to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
Born May 21, 1976 in Montreal and raised in Beaconsfield, Que., Whelan entered McGill in 1995 and graduated in 1998 with a science degree, majoring in physical and occupational therapy. After moving on to an international and pro volleyball career, she returned to complete a master’s degree at McGill. She played four seasons for the volleyball Martlets and served as team captain in three of them, while earning Academic All-Canadian honours and qualifying for the Principal’s Student-athlete Honour Roll. In 1998, she also was named among the CIAU Top 10 Academic All-Canadians.
Whelan received Quebec conference rookie-of-the-year honours in 1995-96 and was voted as the league’s player of the year in 1997-98. A four-time Quebec conference all-star and Team MVP, she earned CIAU All-Canadian honours in 1997-98. She represented Canada at two FISU World University Summer Games and played for the national junior and senior teams (1998-99).
She then played pro volleyball in Tokyo (1999) and Innsbruck (2000-01), before returning to McGill and leading the Martlets to their first-ever regular-season title in the Quebec league. After her playing career was over, she served as an assistant coach for one season at McGill.
