Born on July 5, 1958 in Val d'Or, Que., Marc Richard Joncas went on to play CEGEP football with the Trois-Rivières Diablos, then studied engineering at McGill, graduating with a B.Eng. in 1982. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound defensive tackle became a starter in his third season and over his next two seasons, established himself as one of the premiere linemen in the country. When the dust settled on a brilliant collegiate career, he was in on 140 total tackles, including 11 quarterback sacks.

In 1980, his break-out year, Joncas was voted his first of back-to-back Team MVP awards, earning conference all-star status and CIAU All-Canadian honours. In his senior campaign, he served as co-captain and guided the Redmen to a 7-0 first-place finish in regular-season play, repeating as a league all-star and an All-Canadian. He was voted as the conference's most outstanding down lineman, receiving the league nomination for the J.P. Metras trophy, and captured the Alouettes Alumni Trophy as the most outstanding player in Quebec university football. He was drafted 49th overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1982.
