John James "Jack" McGill was born in Ottawa on Nov. 3, 1909, and earned a commerce degree from McGill in 1934. A prolific scorer during his four seasons with the hockey Redmen, McGill recorded 93 career points, including 59 goals in 70 games overall from 1930-31 to 1933-34. He led the Redmen to three Queen's Cup league championships, as well as one Quebec Amateur Hockey Association banner, a pair of Quebec Senior Hockey League titles and two appearances in the Allan Cup playdowns (1931 and 1934).

A 5-foot-10, 150-pound left-winger, McGill had the unique distinction of twice leading the league in both goals and penalties (1930-31 and 1932-33). He won the QSHL scoring title in 1932-33 with a 12-6-18 slate in 12 games. In his senior year, McGill posted an impressive 26-21-47 record in 28 games overall, then jumped to the National Hockey League, where he played three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens (1934 to 1937),
scoring 27 goals and 37 points with 71 penalty minutes in 134 contests. He passed away on Aug. 21, 1988 in Huntsville, Ont.
