Captain (Monty) Lorne Cuthbert Montgomery was born in New Richmond, Que., on April 5, 1894 and died on March 4, 1985.  He entered McGill in 1912 and eventually graduated from medical school in 1920 after serving for three years with the Canadian medical corps as chief consultant during World War I.  He was wounded four times and received military cross for bravery in addition to the Order of the British Empire, among other awards.   At McGill, he played football, hockey and basketball and in 1914 was an intercollegiate boxing champion in the 145-pound weight class.

Montgomery became the only athlete in McGill history to play on three Yates Cup championship teams, initially winning the intercollegiate title in each of his first two years (1912 and 1913), then returning after the war and serving as captain McGill on the 1919 championship squad.  Later that season, he also served as a player-coach with the basketball team.  In 1928, he was a co-coach on the football team that went on to another Yates Cup title.   He was McGill's top student in medicine and won the prestigious Holmes gold medal for his cumulative academic average.  Montgomery served on numerous athletics committees, including one which led to development of the modern-day CIAU. An emeritus professor of medicine, he acted as McGill's team doctor for decades and served as McGill football team's honourary president in 1952-53.
