McGill hockey captain Tremblay signs with ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins

MONTREAL -- Samuel Tremblay, captain of the McGill University men's hockey team, has signed a contract to play with the Wheeling Nailers, an ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, based in Wheeling, West Virginia.

He is the 95th McGillian to play at the professional level (see complete list below).

During Tremblay's five seasons at McGill, the 5-foot-11, 183-pound centre from St. Basile le Grand, Que., tallied 43 career goals and 79 points in 131 games overall. In regular season play, he registered a 33-29-62 record in 90 contests. He also helped lead McGill to the OUA Queen's Cup league championship during his sophomore year in 2017-18.

"Samuel was a captain for two years at McGill, and he comes to us highly recommended by (former McGill and Wheeling goalie) L.P. Guindon," said Nailers head coach Derek Army in a press release from the team. "He fits our work ethic and what we're trying to build, and he is hungry to play this year, after surgery kept him out for most of last season."

Tremblay, 27, graduated from McGill with a science degree in 2020, followed by a master's degree in kinesiology (2022). He made the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll and qualified for Academic All-Canadian status with a perfect grade-point average of 4.0.

In April, he was the recipient of a Quebec Lieutenant-Governor's Medal, which recognizes involvement, determination and constant striving of Quebecers who have had a positive influence, either in their community or in the province.

In 2020, Tremblay was a co-recipient of the Dr. Mac Teskey Award, presented to a McGill student-athlete for overcoming adversity and serving as an inspiration to others. In December, 2021, he was a recipient of McGill's Jean Béliveau Athletic Award, which recognizes outstanding student-athletes for leadership in the community. He is also a past recipient of the Martlet Foundation's 1938 Champions Award for combining leadership with athletic performance and academic proficiency.

Tremblay enrolled at McGill in 2016 after playing four seasons in the QMJHL with Gatineau (2015-16) and Blainville-Boisbriand (2012-2016).
