MONTREAL – Alana Battiston of Toronto and Adrian Hynes-Guery of Montreal, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Feb. 17, 2013.

Battiston, a fifth-year senior on the women's track and field team, smashed her own McGill record and was crowned Quebec university champion in the pentathlon at the McGill Open track and field meet held at Tomlinson Fieldhouse last Saturday. A 5-foot-10 science student, the 25-year-old Battiston racked up 3,515 points over the five events that make up the pentathlon, surpassing her previous record of 3,492 set last month at the McGill Team Challenge. A product of Michael Power high school, Battiston graduated from McGill with a BSc in 2010 but returned last year to work on a second degree in dietetics.

Hynes-Guery, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound point-guard on the Redmen basketball team, returned to the lineup after missing five games with injuries and scored a game-high 19 points in a key 68-60 victory over Bishop’s last Saturday. The result moved McGill (10-4) into a first-place tie with the Gaiters (10-5) with two games remaining before playoffs. The 25-year-old physical education major added two rebounds, four assists and one steal. He shot a sizzling 63.6 per cent from the floor (7/11), went 4-for-6 from three-point range (66.7) and 1-for-1 from the free-line. A graduate of Dawson College, he transferred to McGill last fall from American International College.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
