Brandon Skubel of Niagara Falls, Ont., and
Marika Labrecque of Lac Etchemin, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Dec. 5, 2021.
Skubel, a six-foot, 205-pound right-winger on the men's hockey team, registered his first career hat-trick for McGill as the Redbirds closed out the semester with a 7-3 win over Concordia to claim the 34th edition of the Ronald Corey Cup rivalry game at the Ed Meagher Arena last Saturday. The 22-year-old sophomore majoring in labour and industrial relations, gave McGill a 1-0 lead at the 6:08 mark of the game. He then put his team ahead 2-1 only 17 seconds into the second period. Skubel completed the hat-trick with an empty-netter at 18:46 of the third stanza. He now has five points, including four goals, in 15 games overall. A product of Drummondville in the QMJHL, he enrolled at McGill last year.
Labrecque, a 5-foot-5 forward, scored four points, including a pair of goals, in two games for the women's hockey team last week. A 23-year-old certificate student in marketing who graduated last spring with a physical education degree, she scored once and added two assists in McGill's 3-2 shootout victory over the Montreal Carabins last Friday. Then she added a goal in a 4-3 loss to Concordia on Sunday. Labrecque currently leads the country with 14 assists and ranks fouthin the national scoring race with 19 points in only 12 games. A product of Dawson College, she enrolled at McGill in 2017 and has scored 99 career points, including 34 goals, in 121 games overall.
