Emanuel Vella of Toronto and
Jorden Savoury of LaSalle, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, March 20, 2022.
Vella, a 6-foot-4, 191-pound goaltender with the McGill men’s hockey team, backstopped eighth-seeded McGill to consecutive OUA East playoff upsets on the road, including a 3-2 overtime victory over top-seeded Queen’s (Mar. 16) and a 3-1 decision over No.4 Nipissing (Mar. 19). The 23-year-old management junior posted a 2-0 record and leads all OUA goalies in post-season play with a stingy 1.35 goals-against average and a stellar .963 save percentage, kicking aside 79 of 82 shots.
Savoury, a 5-foot-8 sprints and jumps specialist with the McGill women's track and field team, , broke two school records while winning a gold and two silver medals at the RSEQ championships in Sherbrooke over the weekend. The 23-year-old psychology senior won gold in the 60m race with a record time of 7.46 seconds which betters her previous team mark of 7.47 and ranks as the second fastest time in the country this season. Savoury also registered silver-medal performances in the long jump and the 4x200 relay. Her leap of 5.80 metres was the sixth-best in the nation this year and broke the eight-year-old school record of 5.75m set by
Helena Reinfels in 2014. In the relay, Savoury ran lead off on a foursome that was clocked in 1:42.92, just missing the six-year-old school record of 1:41.25.
