MONTREAL –
Sam Jenkins of Hamilton, Ont., and
Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Feb. 21, 2022.
Jenkins, a 6-foot-3, 192-pound guard on the men’s basketball team, scored 36 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as McGill swept a pair of games over UQAM, to remain undefeated with a 6-0 record in the RSEQ conference. The Redbirds won 84-62 at home last Thursday and 80-70 on the road two days later. Jenkins, a 23-year-old physical education senior, was in on Saturday’s winning play, a buzzer-beater by teammate Sidney Gauthier. Over the two games, Jenkins made 13 of 26 field-goals, including a sizzling 7-for-10 performance from three-point range. He shot 3-for-6 from the free-throw line and was credited with eight assists and one steal. The fifth-year veteran is a product of the Lincoln Prep Basketball program in Hamilton, where he attended Sir Allan Macnab Secondary School.
Iannotti, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter on the women’s volleyball team, scored a career-high 25 points as McGill registered a key 3-1 victory over division-leading UQAM at the Centre Sportif, Saturday, to force a three-way tie atop the RSEQ standings. Each team has an 8-3 record with one game remaining before playoffs. Iannotti was an unstoppable force on offence, racking up 22 kills and three stuff blocks. But the 22-year-old software engineering junior also added 10 digs and one assist on defence and passed for a solid 2.22 ratio (out of 3). Iannotti was recruited from College Bois-de-Boulogne in 2019.
