MONTREAL –
Matthew Beaudet of Montreal and
Jorden Savoury of LaSalle, Que., are the McGill athletes of the week for the period ending April 3, 2022.
Beaudet, who hails from the NDG borough of Montreal, posted a record-breaking result in the men's 1500-metre race at the U SPORTS track and field championship meet in Saint John, N.B., over the weekend. The 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner finished fourth, with a time of 3:50.64 to erase the previous McGill mark of 3:52.00, which had stood for 25 years since being set by
Alex Hutchinson in 1997. A 22-year-old electrical engineering sophomore in his first year of university competition, Beaudet was named U SPORTS rookie of the year in track, which matched his national top rookie award won during the cross-country running season last fall. He became only the third male to merit the national rookie award in both sports.
Savoury, a 23-year-old psychology senior also finished fourth at the U SPORTS track and field championships. The 5-foot-8 sprinter and jumper crossed the finish line of the women's 60m race in 7.48 seconds, just missing the McGill record of 7.46 that she established last month. Savoury also finished 10th in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.51m and ran leadoff on the 4x200 relay, which failed to qualify for the finals.
