Keanu Yamamoto of Spokane, Wash., and
Marika Labrecque of Lac Etchemin, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 28, 2022.
Yamamoto, a 5-foot-7, 166-pound forward on the men’s hockey team, scored points on seven of the nine goals scored by McGill during three victories last week. In a 5-4 overtime shootout win on the road at UQTR (Feb. 23), the 25-year-old economics senior scored twice and added an assist in regulation time, then added the deciding marker in the shootout. Two nights later, he assisted on all three goals in a 3-2 overtime win versus Carleton (Feb. 25). The next day, he assisted on the only goal in a 1-0 conquest at Carleton (Feb. 26). Yamamoto is currently tied for fourth in the OUA scoring race with 16 points, including five goals, in 14 games. Since being recruited out of the Western Hockey League’s Spokane Chiefs in 2017, he has scored 120 career points with McGill, including 46 goals, in 136 contests overall.
Labrecque, a 5-foot-5 forward on the women’s hockey team, assisted on four of the eight goals scored by McGill during two victories last week that clinched first place in the RSEQ standings. Labrecque set up three goals, including the game-winner in a 4-3 road victory at Ottawa (Feb. 23) and added another helper in a 4-1 win at Bishop’s (Feb. 25). A 23-year-old continuing education student in marketing, she graduated last spring with a physical education degree. Labrecque currently leads the country with 18 assists and ranks fourth in the national scoring race with 23 points in only 15 games. A product of Dawson College, she enrolled at McGill in 2017 and has scored 103 career points, including 34 goals, in 124 games overall.
