MONTREAL –
Maria Gheta of Montreal, and
Levi Londole from LaSalle, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Feb. 16, 2020.
Gheta, a 21-year-old atmospheric science major, was named individual all-around champion as McGill captured the Canadian University Artistic Swimming League title, at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver, B.C., Sunday. The 5-foot-9 sophomore struck gold twice and claimed one silver. She led McGill's elite "White" squad to the team routine title, then joined up with her older sister
Ioana Gheta, to place first of 10 finalists in the duet routine. She also finished second in the solo routine with 73.5667 points, fractions shy of the gold medalist (73.7333). Prior to enrolling at McGill in 2018, Gheta graduated from Vanier College and was a product of the senior national “NextGen” program.
Londolé, 6-foot-8 forward on the men's basketball team, scored a game-high 15 points as division-leading McGill outlasted Concordia 58-54 to clinch the regular season RSEQ conference pennant and capture the second annual George Lengvari Cup, last Saturday. He shot 7-for-12 and was 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. The 25-year-old physical education junior pulled down four rebounds and posted a pair of blocked shots in 35 minutes of play. He also made a spectacular slam dunk in the game, an infrequent sight in RSEQ contests. Londolé transferred to McGill in 2017, after playing at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. Prior to that, he played CEGEP ball at Thetford Academy.
