MONTREAL --
Samuel Wang of Sherbrooke, Que., and
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 25, 2018.
Wang, a 5-foot-10, 153-pound sprinter with the Redmen swim team, won a silver medal and broke three school records leading the Redmen to a seventh place finish out of 25 teams at the U SPORTS national championships in Toronto last weekend. The 22-year biochemistry sophomore was the only McGill athlete to reach the podium at the three-day meet -- finishing second in the men's 50m butterfly (23.94 seconds) to earn second-team All-Canadian honours. He also just missed the podium on four other swims, with fourth-place finishes in the 50m and 100m backstrokes, as well as the 4x100 freestyle relay and the 4x100 medley relay. Wang set a school record in the 50m back (25.03) and led the Redmen 4x100 MR to two school records. He led off that race with a superb swim in the 100m back (54.66), erasing a 15-year-old standard (54.67). The relay was clocked in 3:39.00, breaking the previous school record of 3:40.23.
Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-8 forward with the Martlets hockey team, scored seven points, including four goals, in three playoff games as McGill lost their best-of-three semifinal series 2-1 to the Montreal Carabins last week. The 22-year-old psychology sophomore scored once and added a helper in a 5-3 loss on Feb. 22, then duplicated that output in a 5-2 win on Feb. 24, and tallied twice with one assist in Game 3 on Sunday, a 4-3 loss in double overtime.
