MONTREAL – Basketball players
Jenning Leung, a native of Los Banos, in The Philippines, and
Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Mar. 4, 2018.
Leung, a six-foot, 177-pound point-guard, led McGill to back-to-back RSEQ playoff victories, including a 105-67 semifinal decision over Bishop's and a 98-79 win over Concordia in the league championship game. Leung, a 22-year-old psychology senior, set a school playoff record with seven three-pointers in the game vs Bishop's to finish with 29 points. Over the two games, he scored 37 points and added seven rebounds while averaging 29.5 minutes per game with six assists and five steals. He shot 42.3 per cent from the field (11/26), 44.4 from beyond the arc (8/18) and 87.5 from the foul-line (7/8).
Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre with the women's basketball team, scored 24 points and pulled down 31 rebounds as the top-seeded Martlets swept a pair of playoffs games, defeating Bishop's 72-50 in the RSEQ semifinal on Feb. 28 and erasing a 13-point deficit in the final quarter to surprise Laval 56-52 in the league championship game. The 23-year-old social work senior had one "double-double" and was one point away from another. She shot 32 per cent from the floor (8-for-25) and 80 per cent from the free-throw line (8/10), to go along with four assists, five blocks and one steal. She accounted for 20 per cent of the team's 128 points scored and 44 per cent of their 71 rebounds. Alex was named as the league's player of the year and merited a berth on the first team all-star team.
