Hoopsters Mayali and Pluviose named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL – Jamal Mayali of Toronto, Ont., and Nadege Pluviose of Montreal, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Feb. 9, 2020.
 
Mayali, a 6-foot-3, 178-pound guard, guided the division-leading men’s basketball team to a pair of victories over Bishop’s last week, winning 83-58 at home on Feb. 6 and 73-68 in Lennoxville, Que., on Feb. 8. The 21-year-old political science junior scored 43 points and grabbed six rebounds in the two games, to go along with six assists and five steals. He shot an impressive 56.7 per cent from the field (17-for-30), including a 6-for-16 performance from three-point range and also shot a solid 74 per cent from the free-throw line (3-for-4). Mayali scored 24 points in the first game and added 19 more in the other.
 
Pluviose, a 5-foot-10 forward, guided the women’s basketball team to split a two-game home-and-home series with Bishop’s last week. The Martlets lost 77-69 in double overtime at home on Feb. 6 but bounced back two days later with a 62-58 victory in Lennoxville, Que. The 23-year-old applied marketing major scored 27 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in the two games, to go along with four steals and an assist. She shot 40.7 per cent from the field (11-for-27), including a 2-for-8 effort from three-point range and also shot 75 per cent from the free-throw line (3-for-4). Pluviose tallied nine points in the first game and added a season-high 18 in the other. A product of College Montmorency, she is a first-year transfer from the NCAA’s Robert Morris University, where she played for three seasons.
