MONTREAL -- Jordan-Ty Fournier of Dorval, Que., and Elizabeth Hirsch of Melrose, Mass., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Sept. 29, 2019.

Fournier, a 6-foot-2, 199-pound left-winger with the men's hockey team, scored a rare type of hat-trick in a 4-1 home-ice victory over UQTR on Sunday. The 22-year-old Canadian Studies sophomore opened the scoring on a power-play at 18:28, then put McGill ahead 3-1 with an even-strength marker at 10:26 of the second period. and tallied the game's final marker, shorthanded, at 13:55 of the final frame. Recruited out of the QMJHL last year, Fournier is believed to be the first player in McGill hockey history to register a hat-trick by scoring three different ways, a feat unofficially known as a "Mario Lemieux hat-trick", and named after the legendary star who accomplished it seven times during an illustrious NHL career.

Hirsch, a 5-foot-7 distance runner, registered a silver-medal finish and led the cross-country Martlets to place first of seven universities at the Sherbrooke Open meet last Saturday. The 21-year-old biology senior finished second of 71 entries in the six-kilometre race, posting a time of 24 minutes, 16 seconds. She was four seconds behind Laval's Jessy Lacourse. The No.4 ranked Martlets, who have won both of their meets this season, scored a combined 34 points to finish way ahead of the second-place Montreal Carabins (63) and third-place Laval (63).
