MONTREAL -- Lauren Woods of Guelph, Ont., and Matthew Daly of Pte. Claire, Que., both members of the track and field team, have been named McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending March 10, 2019.

Woods, a 20-year-old biology and mathematics junior earned All-Canadian status with a gold medal performance, while breaking a two decade old school record at the U SPORTS championships, held in Winnipeg over the weekend. More commonly known by her middle name "Abby", the 5-foot-6 jumps specialist, won the women's triple jump with a personal best leap of 12.46 metres to surpass the McGill mark of 12.16 -- set eight months before she was born -- by Brigitte Bigras in 1998. It was the first gold medal result at nationals by a member of the Martlets since Sarah Ali-Khan was triple golden in 2003. The distance by Woods was just three centimetres shy of the RSEQ conference record of 12.49 established in 2011

Daly, a 6-foot-3, 192-pound hurdler, broke a 30-year-old record, twice on the same day, at the U SPORTS track nationals. The 21-year-old political science sophomore, initially erased the school standard in the men's 60m hurdles with his preliminary qualifying time of 8.25 seconds, then smashed it again in the final, crossing the line in 8.19. He surpassed the McGill record of 8.27 set by Derek Covington in 1989. It was a bittersweet result for Daly, who just missed the podium by one-thousandth of a second in a photo finish. A third decimal was required to determine the bronze medal and Daly was credited with a time of 8.189 seconds, just behind the bronze medal time of 8.188.
