Vercheval and Chiarlitti named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL – Claire Vercheval of St. Julie, Que., and Nathan Chiarlitti of Maple, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 22, 2017.

Vercheval, a 6-foot-2 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored 40.5 points over nine sets last week as McGill posted a pair of key victories over Laval (3-2) and Ottawa (3-1) that put McGill back in the playoff race. With seven games remaining, the Martlets are now 6-7 and in a three-way tie for third pace in the RSEQ conference. Vercheval, a 21-year-old physical and health education freshman, registered 34 kills, five service aces and 1.5 stuff blocks. She added 21 digs, a 38.2 per cent kill rate and one assist. A product of Collège Edouard-Montpetit, she is the daughter of former CIS and Canadian Football League star Pierre Vercheval, currently a football analyst with RDS.

Chiarlitti, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound defenceman with the hockey Redmen, scored points on three of the team's seven goals, as sixth-ranked McGill swept a pair of games over Concordia and Nipissing last week. The 24-year-old master's student in kinesiology transferred to McGill this year after three seasons at St.FX. He had one assist and scored the game-winner with 13 seconds remaining in overtime to give McGill a 2-1 victory at Concordia on Friday, then added an assist in Saturday's 5-2 win over Nipissing. Chiarlitti will play for Canada at the FISU world university games, also known as the Winter Universiade, in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Jan. 25 to Feb. 10, 2017.  He skated in the Onatrio Hockey League for Owen Sound prior to playing at the university level.
