MONTREAL -- Christopher Stanford of Quebec City and Melanie Myrand of Lachine, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 30, 2016.

Stanford, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound catcher with the baseball Redmen, was named tournament MVP after guiding McGill to their third consecutive Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association national championship at Parc Ahuntsic last weekend. The  21-year-old international development studies major had eight hits in 16 at bats and reached base two more times on hit by pitches. He racked up 10 runs batted in, three doubles and scored two runs. Stanford hit a walk-off-the-field solo home run with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning as McGill rallied to edge the University of Montreal 3-2 in the gold medal game on Sunday. It was the first homer of the year for the transfer from Franklin Pierce University, an NCAA Div. 2 program. Stanford also reached the NCAA championship national finals last spring, where his school finished seventh.

Myrand struck gold and led the cross-country Martlets to the RSEQ championship at Le Vieux Club de Golf Lennoxville, Saturday. It was their first conference crown since 2013. Myrand, a 5-foot-3 senior, finished first of 83 runners, completing the six-kilometre course in 21 minutes, 23 seconds. The 31-year-old master's student in nursing maintained a 34-second gap ahead of her closest competitor. Myrand, who has won all four of her meets this season, was also named as the conference's athlete of the year and merited all-star status.
