MONTREAL -- Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, the capital city of Guinea, and Thomas Stokes from Vancouver, B.C., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 18, 2015.

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward with the basketball Martlets, was named to the all-tournament team as McGill swept three straight games to capture the Redbird Classic last week with decisive wins over Victoria (84-66), Thompson Rivers (79-55) and Wilfrid Laurier (82-55). Over the tourney, the 22-year-old pharmacology senior racked up 43 points and 30 rebounds, to go along with 10 assists, four steals and a blocked shot. She shot 48.4 per cent from the field (16/33) and made 11 of 18 free-throws (61.1%). Sylla is a product of College Montmorency.

Stokes, a 21-year-old political science senior with the Redmen rugby squad, scored 10 points and made a last-second penalty-kick as McGill rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to edge the Montreal Carabins 20-18 last Saturday. The victory extended McGill's unblemished record to 6-0 atop the RSEQ standings, while the Carabins dropped to 4-2. Stokes, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound centre, ended up with a pair of penalty kicks and added two conversions to spark the Redmen offence. He put McGill on the board with his first penalty goal at the eight-minute mark to give the Redmen an early 3-0 lead. But the Carabins then scored 18 unanswered points to take an 18-3 lead into halftime. In the second half, Stokes converted two tries, then made the game-winning kick in the 79th minute. Prior to enrolling at McGill in 2011, he graduated from St. George's Senior School.
