MONTREAL – Ben Gates of Regina, Sask., and Lily Rose Chatila from Quebec City, , are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Jan. 19, 2025.

Gates, a 5-foot-10, 145-pound middle distance runner with the Redbirds track and field team, produced gold and silver medal performances and guided McGill to a school record at the uOttawa Winter Classic last weekend. The 18-year-old mechanical engineering freshman finished first in the men's 600-metre race, crossing the finish line in one minute, 20.07 seconds. He then helped the silver-medal winning quartet break the school record in the 4x800m relay, running the second leg. That foursome posted a time of 7:37.39, which easily surpassed the previous school record of 7:38.96. A product of Sheldon Williams Collegiate in Regina, Gates enrolled at McGill last fall.

Chatila, a 5-foot-7 guard with the basketball Martlets, scored a combined 33 points as McGill split a pair of games with Concordia last week, winning 69-62 at home and losing 64-46 on the road. The 20-year-old anatomy and cellular biology sophomore added four rebounds, three assists and three steals. She shot a lofty 52.6 per cent from the floor (10-for-19), with a solid 5-for-8 success rate from three-point range and a stellar 8-for-10 performance from the free-throw line. Chatila is a product of Dawson College who enrolled at McGill in 2023.
