MONTREAL –Emilia Mastromatteo from Kenora, Ont., and Stephane Huard of Blainville, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Dec. 1, 2024.

Mastromatteo, a 20-year-old science junior majoring in anatomy and cellular biology, broke a school record en route to winning three gold medals, one silver and a bronze at the Coupe de Quebec senior swim meet in Quebec City, a three-day competition that concluded on Sunday. Her record time occurred in the morning prelims of the 50-metre breaststroke (31.22), which erased her previous short-course standard of 31.29 set at the 2024 Nationals. The 5-foot-6 sprinter won the finals of the 50m breast (31.31), in addition to helping the victorious 4x100m medley relay (4:10.18) and the winning 4x50m mixed medley relay (1:45.66). She claimed silver in the 50m butterfly (27.39) and bronze in the 100m butterfly (1:01.36). A product of the Kenora Swim Club, she graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas high school before enrolling at McGill in 2022.

Huard, a 22-year-old arts sophomore, scored five points in two victories for the No.10 ranked McGill men's hockey team at Place Bell last weekend. The 5-foot-8, 176-pound left winger tallied twice, including the game-winner, and assisted on another goal in a 7-3 victory over York last Friday night. The following afternoon, he added a pair of assists, including one on a shorthanded game-winning goal, in a 6-3 decision over Toronto. He is currently tied for second in team scoring with 17 points in 11 contests. Huard enrolled at McGill in 2023 after playing in the QMJHL, where he skated for Shawinigan, Halifax, Sherbrooke and Blainville.

McGill athlete of the week award recipients receive a gift certificate from Poulet Rouge, serving healthy and nutritious meals since 2017. All students can get a 15% discount at the Poulet Rouge McGill location upon presentation of their student ID card.
