MONTREAL – Elizabeth Ling of Calgary, Alta., and Hazem Issa, from Cairo, in Egypt, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 22, 2023.

Ling, a 21-year-old civil engineering senior, was named female swimmer of the meet as the McGill women's swim team finished first of six schools to capture the second Quebec University Cup competition of the season, held at Sherbrooke, Saturday. She won three gold medals, one silver and was the highest scoring athlete of the meet with 627.5 points, based primarily on the FINA scale. A 5-foot-4 sprinter, Ling won the 50-metre freestyle (25.96) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.06) and the 100 free (56.98). She also anchored the winning 4x100 freestyle relay (3:49.34). Her second-place finish was in the 50 breast, where she was clocked in 32.29 seconds. All of her performances met the qualification standards for the U SPORTS national championships, to be hosted by McGill in Pte. Claire, Que., next February. She is a product of Westmount Charter School in Calgary.
