MONTREAL, QUE – Emma-Jane Scotten of Ottawa and Isaiah Cree from the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation in upstate New York, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 1, 2023.

Scotten, a 21-year-old Arts senior majoring in education in global contexts, was named Tournament MVP while leading the McGill women's basketball team to a perfect 3-0 record at the Laurentian Invitational, a three-day competition held in Sudbury, Ont., last weekend. The 5-foot-9 guard scored a tourney-leading 33 points and 26 rebounds, to go along with 11 assists and three steals. Over her three starts, she shot 36.4 per cent from the field (12/33), went 3-for-10 from three-point range, and drained six of nine free-throw attempts. Scotten enrolled at McGill in 2021 out of Louis Riel Academy in Ottawa.

Cree, an Indigenous co-captain with the McGill Redbirds lacrosse team, scored a game-high five points as McGill defeated visiting Queen's 9-5 in the second annual Legacy Game – which pays tribute to the sport's native roots – to highlight an emotional National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, at Percival Molson Stadium, last Saturday. The victory moved McGill (3-2), two points ahead of Queen's (2-3) in the CUFLA East standings. A 23-year-old senior in international development studies, Cree scored three goals and collected assists on two other markers. The six-foot, 199-pound attackman upped his season totals to 10  points, including five goals, in five games. Cree joined the McGill lineup in 2019 after playing for Sierra Canyon High School near Los Angeles. In his freshman year, he was a recipient of a Tewaaraton Native American Scholarship, a $10,000 award presented by US Lacrosse.
