MONTREAL – Jullien Flynn of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Tyler Welence from Ridgewood, N.J., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 26, 2014.

Flynn, a 5-foot-1, distance runner with the cross-country Martlets, captured the women's individual title and was named Quebec conference athlete of the year at the RSEQ championships, held last Saturday, at Le Club de golf de Grand Mere. The 21-year-old biology senior was first of 71 women entered in the competition, completing the six-kilometre loop in 22 minutes, 12 seconds, some three seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Flynn, who also merited RSEQ all-star honours, is a product of St. Basil secondary school.

Welence, a 6-foot, 170-pound shortstop, was named Tournament MVP and led the Redmen to the Canadian Collegiate Baseball national championship with four wins in five games last weekend in Montreal. A 21-year-old junior majoring in bio-resource engineering, he batted .529 (9-for-17), with two walks, a pair of doubles, three RBIs and five runs scored. Welence, who enrolled at McGill out of Ridgewood high school, guided the Redmen to a 6-1 victory over Concordia in Sunday's gold medal game after a 2-0 semifinal win over the Universite de Montreal. In the preliminary round, McGill defeated UNB (8-0) and Saint Mary's (6-1) before losing 9-2 to Montreal.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
