MONTREAL – Two members of the McGill University Redbirds were among the laureates as the 2024-25 OUA hockey all-stars and award winners were announced on Thursday, in voting conducted by the league's 19 head coaches.
Veteran forward
Brandon Frattaroli of Pierrefonds, Que., earned OUA East first-team all-star status, while freshman defenceman
Igor Mburanumwe from Chambly, Que., merited all-rookie honours.
Frattaroli, a six-foot, 199-pound centre, led the league with 21 goals in 28 games and tied for tops in the nation in that department, playing two less games that UNB's
Peter Reynolds. A 24-year-old industrial relations senior, Frattaroli also tallied a team-leading 34 points and had only 12 penalty minutes. He scored six power-play markers, three game-winners and had one hat-trick. In 41 contests overall, he led the Redbirds in both goals (23) and points (43).
Mburanumwe, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound blue-liner, was one of only 20 rookies in the 19-team league to dress for all 28 games. The imposing rearguard established himself as a top four defenceman on the team and tallied seven points with two goals and 36 penalty minutes. He scored one shorthanded marker and a game-winning tally. Overall, he dressed for 36 of the team's 41 games played and posted a 2-5-7 record with 52 PIMs.
Second-place Queen's had three of six players earning berths on the division's first team, with other spots going to McGill, Concordia and UQTR. The division-leading Stingers added three players on the second dream team, with two berths going to third-place Ottawa and one spot going to Carleton.
UQTR's
Conor Frenette was named OUA East player of the year, while Concordia received three of the division's major awards, including
Simon Lavigne (most outstanding defenceman),
Mathieu Bizier (student-athlete leadership award) and bench boss
Marc-Andre Element (coach of the year). Rounding out the hardware was Queen's teammates
Christian Purboo (most outstanding goaltender) and
Nolan Hutcheson (most sportsmanlike player), along with Carleton's
Gio Marneau (rookie of the year).
