U SPORTS SWIM CHAMPIONSHIP (Day 3): McGill sophomore Naomie Lo collects bronze for second consecutive year at Nationals

VICTORIA, B.C. – Naomie Lo captured a bronze medal on Day 3 as the McGill women's swim team finished third of 22 teams overall to conclude the U SPORTS championships, Saturday, at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

The Toronto Varsity Blues captured their second consecutive national women's title with 1,336 points. UBC was second with 1,166.5, followed by McGill (872), Calgary (818) and Western (378) to round out the top five women's teams.

The Martlets, who produced 20 swims in the "A" Finals, collected two bronze medals over the weekend and had seven fourth-place finishes. They improved on last year's fourth-place finish at the U SPORTS title meet in Quebec City, where they collected a silver and two bronzes. At the 2020 Nationals, the McGill women posted a seventh-place result.

Lo, a 20-year-old software engineering sophomore from Toronto, finished third in the 200-metre butterfly, posting a time of 2:17.20 in the long-course pool. It was the second consecutive year that Lo collected a bronze medal, after reaching the podium in the 200 fly (2:16.09). Over the weekend, Lo reached the "A" Finals four times, including a pair of fourth-place finishes (400 free, 4x200 free relay) and was eighth in the 800 free.

The only other member of the Martlets to medal at this meet was Halifax native Isabel Sarty, a 23-year-old master's student in neuroscience, who finished third in the 50-metre butterfly (27.92). Sarty also finished fourth in four other events (50 free, 100 free, 4x200 free relay, 4x100 free relay) and seventh in the 200 free.

This was the final event of the season for McGill, the RSEQ champions in both genders, which qualified a school record 35 swimmers for Nationals, including 19 women.
