MARKHAM, Ont. — Iris Tinmouth of Comox, B.C., closed her McGill University career with gold in the gruelling 800-metre freestyle at the U SPORTS national swimming championships Saturday at the Markham Pan Am Centre.
The McGill women finished third of 21 schools with 978.5 points, behind champion UBC (1,445) and runner-up Toronto (1,029). Calgary placed fourth (723.5), followed by Western (493) to round out the top five.

The three-day championship featured a remarkable number of short-course record performances. McGill women accounted for four team records and one RSEQ conference mark, while the meet overall produced 22 U SPORTS championship records — 15 in the men's events and seven in the women's races.
Tinmouth, a 21-year-old microbiology and immunology senior, won the 800 freestyle in 8:37.67 to capture the longest women's race of the meet in the final swim of her university career.
Rebecca McGrath of Pointe-Claire, Que., added bronze in the 100 backstroke in 59.83.
The Martlets also captured bronze in the 4×200 freestyle relay as Harper Lipton of Toronto, Tinmouth, Beatrice Weiss-Reid of Ottawa and Maya McGhan of Ottawa finished third in 8:08.20.
The relay result also marked a historic moment for the program, as McGill's men and women both reached the podium in the same relay event at the national championships for the first time in school history.
Head coach Peter Carpenter said the team's performances went well beyond the medal count.
"It will be hard to keep this straight, but I will try," Carpenter said. "Despite our teams finishing third and fourth, I can confidently say that this was the best weekend of results we have ever had during my time at McGill, just based on personal bests and team records."
Carpenter said the team responded well in one of the fastest meets in Canadian university swimming.
"The meet is by far the fastest it has ever been and our athletes absolutely rose to the occasion," he said.
Tinmouth is one of five seniors expected to graduate from the Martlets program, joining Emilia Mastromatteo, Chloe Cooper-Kelly, Natasha Frost and Sydney Shemilt.
