VICTORIA, B.C. –
Pablo Collin won a bronze for his fourth medal of the weekend and teammate
Hazem Issa posted a pair of bronze medal finishes as the McGill men's swim team concluded the U SPORTS championship, Saturday, at Saanich Commonwealth Place.
The Redbirds finished fifth of 22 teams overall, with 17 swims in the "A" Finals while collecting a pair of golds and three bronzes. Last year, the Redbirds finished third, with four golds, two silvers and a pair of bronzes.
The UBC Thunderbirds captured their sixth-straight national title. UBC's 1,158.5 points won the meet, while Calgary (876), Ottawa (795), Toronto (783), and
McGill (745.5) followed to round out the top five men's teams.
Collin, a computer science sophomore from Marseille, France, ended up with a pair of gold medals and two bronzes over the weekend, to merit All-Canadian honours. All gold medalists earn first-team status, while silver medalists receive second-team status.
On Day 3, he swam leadoff on the men's 4x100-metre freestyle relay, which finished third in three minutes, 25.62 seconds. The foursome also included three civil engineering majors, namely the aforementioned Issa, senior
Bruno Dehem-Lemelin of Ottawa and sophomore
Erik Linseisen of Burlington, Vt.
Collin also finished fourth in the 100 free, sixth in the 4x100 medley relay and ninth in the grueling 1500 free..
Issa, a 20-year-old civil engineering sophomore who hails from Cairo, in Egypt, won his other bronze in the 100m freestyle, which was clocked at 51.20 seconds. He finished the weekend with sixth swims in the "A" Finals. He was fourth in the 50 butterfly, fifth in the 50 free, sixth in the 4x100 medley relay and seventh in the 100 fly.
Other podiums won by McGill men earlier in the meet included the aforementioned gold for Collin in the 400 free (3:57.71) and a bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay (7:35.78), with a quartet that included Collin, plus Montrealer
Alex Younes of Montreal,
Bruno Dehem-Lemelin of Kirkland, Que., and
Erik Linseisen, from Burlington, Vt.
This was the final event of the season for McGill, the RSEQ champions in both genders, which qualified a school record 35 swimmers for Nationals, including 16 men.
