MARKHAM, Ont. — Loic Courville-Fortin of Repentigny, Que., was involved in all five medals won by McGill University, including a gold in the 200-metre backstroke, as the U SPORTS national swimming championships wrapped up on Saturday at the Markham Pan Am Centre.
The Redbirds finished fourth of 22 schools with 77 points, behind champion UBC (1,644), Toronto (935.5) and Calgary (883.5). The Montreal Carabins rounded out the top five with 245..

The three-day championship featured a remarkable number of record performances. McGill men accounted for eight team records and five RSEQ marks, while the meet overall produced 22 U SPORTS championship records — 15 in the men's events and seven in the women's races.
Courville-Fortin, a 21-year-old biochemistry sophomore, captured gold in the 200 backstroke in 1:53.41, establishing a McGill record. The Repentigny native added bronze in the 100 backstroke in 51.63. He was also part of McGill's three relay medal performances.
The Redbirds took silver in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay as Saint-Hubert, Que., swimmer Hocine Feddag, Montreal's Artiom Volodin, Courville-Fortin and Gatineau, Que., native Yegor Semenyuk combined for 7:09.81. The performance broke the McGill, RSEQ and Quebec senior provincial records.
McGill also added bronze in the 4×100 freestyle relay with Courville-Fortin, Feddag, Paris native Augustin Boussion and River He of Richmond, B.C., finishing in 3:15.05.
Another bronze came in the 4×100 medley relay, where Courville-Fortin, Feddag, Volodin and Semenyuk also reached the podium.
Head coach Peter Carpenter said the team's performances went well beyond the medal count.
"It will be hard to keep this straight, but I will try," Carpenter said after the opening day of racing. "Despite only winning the one bronze medal in the last race of the day I can confidently say that today was the best day of results I have ever had just based on personal bests and team records."
The Redbirds are expected to graduate six seniors this spring, including Charles-Antoine Boucher, Riccardo Camuso, Alejandro Giggey, Tristan Govier, Erik Linseisen and Romain Vanmoen.
