VICTORIA, BC – Pablo Collin of the McGill men's swim team continues to impress on the big stage with gold and bronze medals on Day 2 of the U SPORTS national championships, Friday.

The 21-year-old computer science sophomore from Marseille, France, was also named a recipient of the U SPORTS Community Service Award for combining athletic excellence with leadership and academic prowess. The RSEQ conference swimmer of the year has previously earned Academic All-Canadian status and qualified for the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll with a lofty 3.91 grade-point average. A co-founder and influential member of the "Ubaye-Haut Verdon" in his native France, a collective that aimed at influencing a transformation towards a more sustainable model for exploitation of mountain areas. He cycled alone across the French Alps to create awareness of the pollution caused by vehicles and to encourage the practice of eco-tourism by demonstrating that it is possible to travel without emitting greenhouse gases. He also surpervised a "Step towards the Sea" initiative, which taught swimming classes to the youth in his hometown Marseille, a port city in southwest France, to better familiarize them with a marine environment in the hopes of reducing drowning episodes. Also, he was a founder and manager of "Caricaterre", a satirical cartoon focussed on raising awareness of his ecologial causes.

After opening the meet on Thursday with a gold medal performance in the 400-metre freestyle, Collin came out strong again on Day 2, winning the 200m free in 1:51.19, well ahead of Toronto's Bernard Godolphin, who claimed silver in 1:52.84.

Collin also swam the second leg of McGill's bronze-medal 4x200m freestyle relay, which touched the wall in 7:35.78, fractions behind Toronto (7:35.43). The other members of that quartet included Montrealer Alex Younes in the leadoff spot, Bruno Dehem-Lemelin of Kirkland, Que., on the third leg and Erik Linseisen, the anchor from Burlington, Vt.

Linseisen also reached the "A" final in the 400 individual medley, where he placed fifth. Finally, teammate Hazem Issa of Abu Dhabi finished fourth in the 50m fly.

With one day remaining in the meet, UBC continues to lead all 22 schools in the men's division with 774.5 points. Rounding out the Top 5 is Calgary (637), Ottawa (606), Toronto (503) and McGill (500).

Other meet highlights on the men's side, was Toronto's Gabe Mastromatteo, who captured the men's 100m breast in 1:01.38, while breaking his second U SPORTS record of the weekend. Calgary's Stephen Calkins also captured his second gold of the weekend, winning the men's 50m fly with a time of 24.21.

The final day of the championship takes place on Saturday (Feb. 25), with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific.
