SHERBROOKE, QUE –
Elizabeth Ling was named swimmer of the meet while leading the McGill women's swim team to capture the first Quebec Cup competition of the RSEQ season at the Universite de Sherbrooke, Friday.
McGill, the defending RSEQ conference champions, collected 615 points to finish first of six teams in the women's division, easily out-distancing Ottawa (392), Laval (308.5), Montreal (201.5), Sherbrooke (70) and UQTR (13).
McGill also won the combined men's and women's team scoring with 1,071 points overall – including 456 from the Redbirds – to edge out second-place Ottawa (924.67).
"Our women were exceptional as expected," said McGill head coach
Peter Carpenter. "They dominated in every metric, points, gold medals and total medals. "We obviously won the combined meet as well which is awesome and something we are planning on doing all year."
Ling, a 20-year-old civil engineering junior from Calgary, registered 624 points on the FINA scale to edge out teammate
Daphne Danyluk (615) for swimmer of the meet honors. Both won three gold medals and added a silver.
Ling, a 5-foot-4 sprinter, won the 50-metre backstroke (29:06) and 100 freestyle (56.63) in addition to swimming the leadoff leg of the winning 4x50 freestyle relay, which touched the wall in 1:46.14. She finished second in the 50 butterfly (28.31).
Joining Ling on the winning 4x50 relay was
Greta Zapparoli, a native of Italy,
Nikki van Noord of Hudson, Que., and
Isabel Sarty of Halifax.
Danyluk, a senior from Riviere des Prairies, Que., won the 100 back (1:02.55) and 200 individual medley (2:18.57), in addition to swimming leadoff on the winning 4x50 medley relay (1:55.89). The 23-year-old master's student in experimental medicine was second to Ling in the 50 back (29.26).
Another gold-medal performance for the Martlets was produced by
Naomie Lo (400 free, 4:20.88), a computer science sophomore from Toronto.
The final gold medal relay result was in the 4x200 free (8:31.80), which featured
Ana Olszewski of New York City, plus Montrealer
Cailin McMurray,
Mia Desjarlais of Prevost, Que., and the aforementioned
Greta Zapparoli.
The second of five Quebec Cup competitions that make up the RSEQ conference schedule will be hosted by McGill at Memorial Pool on Saturday, Oct. 29. it will be the team's only major home meet this season.
