SHERBROOKE, QUE –
Malachy Belkhelladi and
Erik Linseisen each won one gold with a pair of silver medal performances as the McGill men's swim finished second of six teams at the first Quebec Cup competition of the RSEQ season at the Universite de Sherbrooke, Friday.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees won the men's side of the meet with 532.67 points, to finish ahead of McGill, the defending RSEQ conference champions, which scored 456. Laval placed third (297.5), followed by Montreal (174.67), Sherbrooke (84.17) and UQTR (13).
McGill did win the combined men's and women's team scoring with 1,071 points overall – including 456 from the Redbirds – to edge out second-place Ottawa (924.67).
The Redbirds tallied two golds, six silvers and three bronzes.
"The meet was a wake-up call for our men," said McGill head coach
Peter Carpenter, whose troops lost All-Canadian swimmers
Clement Secchi and
Samuel Wang, to graduation. "After having a few years of relative dominance, we are definitely looking up at Ottawa and we will need to find solutions to how we might catch them."
Belkhelladi, a 19-year-old psychology sophomore from Montreal, anchored the winning 4x200 freestyle relay, clocking in a 7:30.59. Others on that foursome included
Pablo Collin,
Erik Linseisen and
Alex Younes. Belkhelladi produced a silver-medal finish in the 100 free (50.45) and the 4x50 medley relay (1:42.47). He also finished sixth in the 200 medley relay (2:06.84)
Aside from gold for Linseisen on the 4x200 relay, he settled for silver in both the 200 breast (2:18.52) and the 200 medley (2:04.33). He also was 10
th in the 100 free (52.01).
The other gold medal effort by a McGill swimmer was accomplished by
Robin Domingo, a 17-year-old rookie from Greer, S.C. The kinesiology freshman took the 200 butterfly in 2:02.37
