MONTREAL - The major award nominees have been announced for McGill University's 43rd annual athletics gala, an event scheduled to be held on April 19, via a virtual online Facebook Premiere broadcast, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
In all, 10 major trophies will be presented at the event, in addition to MVP awards for 30 varsity teams.
Four nominees are in the running for the Major D. Stuart Forbes trophy, presented to the male student-athlete who has brought the most credit to the University by reason of his athletic achievements. The group includes four All-Canadians, namely,
Andrew Seinet-Spaulding (football),
Nikolas Brouillard (hockey),
Clement Secchi (swimming) and
Mehdi Ibn-Brahim (soccer).
On the women's side, three nominees are vying for the Gladys Bean trophy, awarded to the female student-athlete of the year. The finalists include All-Canadians
Jade Downie-Landry (hockey) and
Daphne Danyluk (swimming), in addition to
Maria Gheta (artistic swimming), who was named as the most outstanding individual at nationals.

Hockey (w), RSEQ conference champions, finished second in five-team league, 23-12 overall record, 11-5-4 regular season, 4-0 in playoffs, among eight teams to qualify for U SPORTS national championship but unable to participate due to Coronavirus pandemic
Swimming (m), RSEQ conference champions, finished first in six-team league, winning eight gold medals, six silvers, five bronzes at championship meet, qualified 17 men for nationals, placed 4th of 23 teams at U SPORTS championship, where they won two golds, two silvers and one bronze
Swimming (w), RSEQ conference champions, finished first in six-team league, winning six gold medals, two silvers, three bronzes at championship meet, qualified 10 women for nationals, placed 7th of 23 teams at U SPORTS championship, where they won one silver medal
HARRY GRIFFITHS TROPHY NOMINEES

Artistic Swimming (w), CUASL champions, posted first-place finishes in all three meets, finishing first of 13 teams at national championship in Vancouver
Lacrosse (m), CUFLA East Division champions, 10-2 overall record, 10-0 regular season, finished first of seven teams in league, one of six teams to qualify for CUFLA championship at Percival Molson Stadium but lost semifinal opener 6-5 in overtime
