MONTREAL --
The Brock Badgers scored a game-winning try in the dying minutes to defeat McGill 26-14 and capture the consolation final at the Canadian university men's rugby nationals on Saturday.
The Badgers, who were seeded last in the eight-team tourney, finished fifth with a 2-1 record, while No.7 seeded McGill ended up sixth with a 1-2 tourney mark.
Brock carried a 5-0 lead into halftime on a try by Devon Ollson and, despite repeated lead changes, continued to dominant the line-out.
McGill took a 7-5 lead in the second half, when Pierre Grison, a management senior from France, scored a try in the 34th minute, converted by rookie fly-half Monty Weatherall, a native of the UK.
But Carter Bondy replied with a try to restore Brock's lead at 12-7 after the conversion.
The lead changed once again, when McGill's Antoine Guay, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound mechanical engineering junior from Verdun. Que., touched down to put his troops ahead 14-12 after another conversion by Weatherall.
However a game-breaking play materialized in the 56th minute.
Bondy pulled off a highlight-reel drive to cut through the McGill defence and outrace a pair of defenders to the ball. He booted it into the end zone and Steven Commerford pounced on the ball for the game-winning try late in the game.
Victory Eichie, a senior who earned man-of-the-match honours for Brock, punched in a try shortly after to seal the deal. Commerford finished with a pair of converts.
Eric Shuell, an Arts senior from Toronto, was named as Game MVP for McGill, which finished a solid season with an 8-4 record overall, including a 5-1 second-place finish in the RSEQ conference and ended up as silver medalists to qualify for Nationals.
The victory caps off an unlikely season by the Badgers, who turned their program around after posting a record of 1-7 and missing the playoffs in 2018. This year, Brock placed third in their division with a record of 3-3 and ended up with a 7-5 mark overall, claiming the OUA bronze medal to qualify for Nationals.
