MONTREAL — James Mason scored a try with time expiring as McGill rallied for a dramatic 29-27 victory over visiting Concordia in RSEQ men's rugby action at Percival Molson Stadium on Saturday.

The victory gave McGill its fourth consecutive Dave Hardy Cup triumph and a 4-3 lead in the annual rivalry series. Concordia captured the first three editions before the Redbirds turned the tables.

The Cup was inaugurated in 2019 and is named after Dave Hardy, a longtime fixture on the Quebec rugby scene who coached at both universities. Hardy served as McGill's head coach from 1982 to 1989 and later was an assistant coach at Concordia.

The Redbirds appeared headed for defeat after Concordia's Omar Mokri kicked a penalty goal in the 80th minute to give the Stingers a 27-24 lead. But McGill answered with one final push and Mason, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering senior from Paris, France, crossed the goal line for an unconverted try, giving the Redbirds a two-point victory.

The result improved McGill's record to 1-1, while Concordia fell to 0-3. With five tries scored in the game, the Redbirds earned a bonus point in the standings, while Concordia also earned an extra point for losing by a margin of seven points or less. McGill now sits fourth in the seven-team Quebec conference with five points, four ahead of fifth-place ConU.

The Stingers opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Mokri connected on a penalty kick for a 3-0 lead. McGill was reduced to 14 men five minutes later when Lucas McArthur was shown a yellow card. Mokri had an opportunity to double the Concordia advantage on the ensuing penalty but missed the attempt.

The Redbirds took their first lead in the 27th minute when Roberto Frascione scored an unconverted try to make it 5-3. Concordia answered in the 33rd minute. Sean Sowden scored a try and Mokri converted to put the Stingers back in front 10-5.

McGill was dealt another setback when James Allan received a yellow card in the 37th minute, but Mokri missed a penalty attempt two minutes later that would have extended Concordia's advantage.

Harry Corkum then scored an unconverted try in the 40th minute to send the teams into halftime tied 10-10.

The Redbirds carried that momentum into the second half. Frascione scored his second try of the match in the 42nd minute and Max Bernhart converted, giving McGill a 17-10 lead.

Seven minutes later, Nicolas Tissier added another try and Bernhart again made the conversion to extend the margin to 24-10.

Concordia mounted a comeback of its own. Sowden scored his second try in the 68th minute and Mokri converted, cutting McGill's lead to 24-17.

The Redbirds went a man down for the third time when James Pitman was shown a yellow card in the 72nd minute. Concordia capitalized almost immediately, with Jaxon Alexander scoring a try in the 73rd. Mokri's conversion tied the game 24-24.

Mokri then put the Stingers ahead with his 80th-minute penalty goal, setting the stage for McGill's last-gasp response. Mason's try completed a contest that featured four lead changes and two ties.

McGill will return to action Oct. 3 with a 3 p.m. road game against Carleton (0-2). Concordia hosts Bishop's (0-3) on Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.

REDBIRDS RAP: The Dave Hardy Cup was inaugurated in 2019, with Concordia winning the first three editions and McGill capturing the next four. There was no Cup game in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

2019 — Concordia 23, McGill 21, at Concordia Stadium. The Stingers captured the inaugural Cup on a penalty kick on the final play.

2021 — Concordia 14, McGill 6, at Concordia Stadium. The Stingers broke a 3-3 halftime deadlock and scored the game's only try on the final play.

2022 — Concordia 24, McGill 17, at Concordia Stadium. The Stingers won their third consecutive Hardy Cup after taking the lead for good in the 69th minute.

2023 — McGill 23, Concordia 22, at Concordia Stadium. The Redbirds captured the Cup for the first time and snapped Concordia's three-game reign.

2024 — McGill 30, Concordia 10, at Percival Molson Stadium. The Redbirds won their second straight Cup behind 15 points from Martin Laval.

2025 — McGill 50, Concordia 25, at Concordia Stadium. The Redbirds scored eight tries to make it three consecutive Hardy Cup victories.

2026 — McGill 29, Concordia 27, at Percival Molson Stadium. Mason scored the winning try with time expiring as McGill claimed its fourth straight Cup and took a 4-3 lead in the series.

Mason marque à la dernière seconde et McGill arrache la victoire à Concordia dans le duel de la Coupe Hardy

Les Redbirds répliquent après avoir vu les Stingers prendre les devants à la 80e minute et s'échappent avec un gain de 29-27

MONTRÉAL — James Mason a inscrit un essai alors que le temps s'écoulait pour permettre à McGill de réussir une remontée spectaculaire et de vaincre les Stingers de Concordia 29-27, samedi, dans un match de rugby masculin du RSEQ disputé au stade Percival-Molson.

Cette victoire a permis à McGill de mettre la main sur la Coupe Dave-Hardy pour une quatrième année consécutive et de prendre les devants 4-3 dans cette série annuelle entre les deux rivaux. Concordia avait remporté les trois premières éditions avant que les Redbirds ne renversent la vapeur.

La Coupe a été créée en 2019 et porte le nom de Dave Hardy, figure de longue date du rugby québécois qui a dirigé aux deux universités. Hardy a été entraîneur-chef de McGill de 1982 à 1989 avant d'occuper plus tard un poste d'entraîneur adjoint à Concordia.

Les Redbirds semblaient se diriger vers la défaite lorsque Omar Mokri a réussi une pénalité à la 80e minute pour donner une avance de 27-24 aux Stingers. McGill a toutefois répliqué avec une dernière poussée et Mason, un finissant de 21 ans en génie mécanique originaire de Paris, en France, a franchi la ligne des buts pour inscrire un essai non transformé qui a procuré une victoire de deux points aux Redbirds.

McGill a ainsi porté sa fiche à 1-1, tandis que Concordia a glissé à 0-3. Avec cinq essais au cours du match, les Redbirds ont récolté un point de bonification au classement, tandis que Concordia en a également obtenu un pour une défaite par sept points ou moins. McGill occupe maintenant le quatrième rang de la conférence québécoise à sept équipes avec cinq points, soit quatre de plus que Concordia, au cinquième échelon.

Les Stingers ont ouvert la marque à la 18e minute lorsque Mokri a réussi une pénalité pour donner une avance de 3-0 aux siens. McGill s'est retrouvé à 14 joueurs cinq minutes plus tard lorsque Lucas McArthur a écopé d'un carton jaune. Mokri a eu l'occasion de doubler l'avance de Concordia sur la pénalité qui a suivi, mais sa tentative a raté la cible.

Les Redbirds ont pris les devants pour la première fois à la 27e minute lorsque Roberto Frascione a inscrit un essai non transformé pour porter la marque à 5-3. Concordia a répliqué à la 33e minute. Sean Sowden a marqué un essai et Mokri a réussi la transformation pour redonner les devants aux Stingers, 10-5.

McGill a subi un autre revers lorsque James Allan a reçu un carton jaune à la 37e minute, mais Mokri a raté une tentative de pénalité deux minutes plus tard qui aurait permis à Concordia d'accroître son avance.

Harry Corkum a ensuite inscrit un essai non transformé à la 40e minute pour permettre aux deux équipes de retraiter au vestiaire à égalité 10-10.

Les Redbirds ont poursuivi sur leur lancée au retour de la pause. Frascione a inscrit son deuxième essai du match à la 42e minute et Max Bernhart a réussi la transformation, donnant à McGill une avance de 17-10.

Sept minutes plus tard, Nicolas Tissier a ajouté un autre essai et Bernhart a de nouveau réussi la transformation pour porter l'avance à 24-10.

Concordia a alors amorcé sa propre remontée. Sowden a inscrit son deuxième essai à la 68e minute et Mokri a réussi la transformation, réduisant l'avance de McGill à 24-17.

Les Redbirds se sont retrouvés à court d'un joueur pour une troisième fois lorsque James Pitman a écopé d'un carton jaune à la 72e minute. Concordia en a profité presque immédiatement, Jaxon Alexander inscrivant un essai à la 73e. La transformation de Mokri a créé l'égalité 24-24.

Mokri a ensuite donné les devants aux Stingers grâce à sa pénalité à la 80e minute, préparant ainsi la réplique de dernière minute de McGill. L'essai de Mason a couronné un match marqué par quatre changements de meneur et deux égalités.

McGill reprendra l'action le 3 octobre à 15 h avec un match sur la route contre Carleton (0-2). Concordia accueillera Bishop's (0-3) le 4 octobre à 13 h.

2024 — McGill 30, Concordia 10, au stade Percival-Molson. Les Redbirds ont remporté une deuxième Coupe consécutive grâce notamment aux 15 points de Martin Laval.

2025 — McGill 50, Concordia 25, au stade Concordia. Les Redbirds ont inscrit huit essais pour signer un troisième triomphe consécutif dans le match de la Coupe Hardy.

2026 — McGill 29, Concordia 27, au stade Percival-Molson. Mason a inscrit l'essai victorieux alors que le temps s'écoulait, permettant à McGill de remporter une quatrième Coupe consécutive et de prendre les devants 4-3 dans la série.
