McGill's comeback takes flight before Gee-Gees clip Redbirds' wings

Four-try effort not enough as Ottawa survives second-half scare to remain undefeated in RSEQ rugby

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL — McGill rallied from a 17-point deficit to pull even with Ottawa, only to watch the visiting Gee-Gees score 25 unanswered points en route to a 49-24 victory in RSEQ men's rugby action at Percival Molson Stadium on Saturday.

The Redbirds trailed 17-0 late in the first half and 24-7 early in the second before mounting a furious comeback, scoring three tries and a conversion over an eight-minute span to tie the contest 24-24 in the 57th minute.

But Ottawa regained the lead three minutes later and pulled away down the stretch, scoring four tries in the final 20 minutes to remain undefeated atop the seven-team RSEQ conference with a 4-0 record.

McGill dropped to 2-2 and sits fourth in the standings, four points behind the Montreal Carabins (3-0), with two games remaining before the playoffs.

Nicolas Tissier scored two tries for the Redbirds, while Harry Corkum and Roberto Frascione added one apiece. James Allan kicked two conversions to round out McGill's scoring.

Ottawa was led by Nate Phillips, who contributed 14 points on four conversions and two penalty goals. Ben Holahan scored twice, while Josh Seguin, Jensen Howe, Liam Wood, Brendan Bergin and Ryan Plunkett each added a try.

The Gee-Gees built a 17-0 lead on converted tries by Seguin and Holahan, sandwiched around a Phillips penalty goal. Tissier put McGill on the scoreboard with a converted try in the final minute of the opening half, cutting the deficit to 17-7 at the break.

Ottawa restored its 17-point cushion early in the second half on a converted try by Howe, but McGill answered with 17 consecutive points.

Corkum crossed the line in the 49th minute, followed by Frascione four minutes later. Tissier completed the comeback with his second try in the 57th minute, but the ensuing conversion attempt missed, leaving the score tied 24-24.

Wood put Ottawa back in front with an unconverted try in the 60th minute. Phillips added a penalty goal before Bergin, Holahan and Plunkett scored tries over the final seven minutes to seal the victory.

Both teams earned a bonus point for scoring at least four tries, with Ottawa crossing the goal line seven times and McGill registering four.

The Gee-Gees have now won in every RSEQ venue. Molson Stadium was the only field that they hadn't won at since they entered the league in 2018

The Redbirds will travel to Lennoxville on Oct. 18 for a 3:15 p.m. kickoff against fifth-place Bishop's (1-4), in a must-win game for the Gaiters. A McGill victory would clinch a playoff berth and the Redbirds will then close out the regular season at home against the third-place Montreal Carabins (3-0).

Ottawa will visit Montreal on Oct. 18 for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
