From ecstasy to agony: McGill's upset bid goes wide as Carabins steal last-second victory

Redbirds push undefeated rivals to the brink before last-second penalty sets stage for playoff rematch

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL — Sacha Laidouni kicked a penalty goal with time expiring as the Montreal Carabins rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to edge McGill 24-22 in a dramatic RSEQ men's rugby regular-season finale at Percival Molson Stadium on Friday.

The Redbirds appeared headed for an upset after James Allan connected on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to give McGill a 22-21 lead. But the Carabins answered with one final opportunity and Laidouni split the uprights to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

The result clinched first place for Montreal, which completed an undefeated regular season with a 6-0 record atop the seven-team RSEQ conference, two points ahead of second-place École de technologie supérieure (5-1).

Ottawa (4-2) finished third, followed by fourth-place McGill (3-3), which ended the campaign five points behind the Gee-Gees.

The Redbirds will have an opportunity for revenge when they visit the Carabins in an RSEQ semifinal on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m.

McGill scored three first-half tries to build a 19-7 advantage at the break, but Montreal responded with 14 unanswered points in the second half before the teams exchanged penalty goals in a frantic finish.

Allan led the Redbirds with 12 points, scoring a try, converting two others and adding a penalty goal. Matthew Corkum and Damon Scharfe each contributed a try.

Montreal was paced by Laidouni, who accounted for nine points on three conversions and the winning penalty goal. Théo Archen, Paul Decupper and Roman Layley each scored a try.

The Carabins struck first when Archen crossed the goal line in the fourth minute and Laidouni converted for a 7-0 lead.

McGill answered almost immediately, with Allan scoring and converting his own try a minute later to tie the game 7-7.

Corkum put the Redbirds ahead with a try in the 25th minute and Allan converted to make it 14-7. Allan missed a penalty attempt in the 37th minute, but Scharfe added an unconverted try in the final minute of the opening half to send McGill into the break with a 19-7 advantage.

The Carabins mounted their comeback in the second half, with Decupper scoring a converted try in the 70th minute to trim the deficit to 19-14.

Layley followed with another converted try five minutes later, giving Montreal its first lead since the opening minutes at 21-19.

Allan briefly restored McGill's advantage with his 80th-minute penalty goal, setting the stage for Laidouni's dramatic winner.

The victory completed a perfect regular season for the Carabins, while McGill will look to reverse the result when the teams meet again in the playoffs.

In the other RSEQ semifinal, third-place Ottawa will visit second-place ÉTS on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 8:30 p.m.

McGill a répliqué presque immédiatement.
