(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)
LENNOXVILLE, Que. — Brothers Harry and Matthew Corkum combined for three tries as McGill overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Bishop's 40-33 in RSEQ men's rugby action at Coulter Field on Sunday.
The Redbirds trailed 26-19 at the break before rallying to clinch the fourth and final playoff berth in the seven-team Quebec conference.
Harry Corkum scored twice to increase his league-leading try total to eight in five games and was named McGill's player of the game. His younger brother Matt added another try as the Redbirds improved to 3-2 with one regular-season contest remaining.
Nicolas Tissier also scored twice and Roberto Frascione added a single as McGill crossed the goal line six times. James Allan rounded out the scoring with five conversions for 10 points.
Bishop's countered with five tries, getting one apiece from Gabin Armandie, Alexander Bubyn, Kai Hucal, Matisse Labrenz and Michael McGuinness. Mitchell Darby converted four of the five tries for eight points and was named the Gaiters' player of the game.
The Redbirds collected five points in the standings — four for the victory and a bonus point for scoring at least four tries. The result eliminated fifth-place Bishop's, which finished its season with a 1-5 record.
The victory also marked McGill's ninth consecutive win over Bishop's since the Gaiters last defeated McGill 19-17 in an RSEQ semifinal on Nov. 3, 2018.
McGill's opening-round playoff opponent remains to be determined. The fourth-place Redbirds could finish tied with third-place École de technologie supérieure (4-1) if the Piranhas lose their regular-season finale to Ottawa (4-1). However, ÉTS holds the head-to-head tiebreaker after defeating McGill 40-10 earlier this season.
If the standings remain unchanged, McGill will face the division-leading Montreal Carabins (5-0) in the semifinals on Oct. 31. However, if Ottawa defeats Montreal, the Gee-Gees will finish first in the RSEQ standings and face the Redbirds in the semifinal round.
McGill will close out the regular season at home against Montreal on Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
