MONTREAL -- Three members of the McGill University football team were named as all-stars, the RSEQ conference announced on Thursday, in voting conducted by the league's five head coaches.
The threesome includes defensive linemen
Andrew Seinet-Spaulding of Pierrefonds, Que., and
Joshua Archibald of Montreal, along with defensive back
Markens Valcourt of Ile-Bizard, Que.
It marked the team's highest number of all-stars on defence in 16 years, since four defenders were named in 2003.
The trio will be in action on Saturday (Nov. 2) when third-seeded McGill (3-5) makes the short trip around Mt. Royal to confront the second-place Montreal Carabins (6-2) in a 2 p.m. kickoff at Stade CEPSUM, a game slated to be televised nationally on the TVA Sports network. The league's other semifinal has fourth-seeded Concordia (2-6) in Quebec City against division-leading Laval (7-1) in a 1 p.m. start
Seinet-Spaulding, a six-foot, 292-pound defensive tackle, was a unanimous selection. He led the conference with 13.5 tackles for loss for 62 yards of real estate in eight games, including a league-leading seven quarterback sacks. Despite being double-teamed in most games, the 23-year-old social work senior ranked fifth among McGill defenders with 27.5 total tackles, 22 of them solo. The recipient of a Montreal Alouettes athletic excellence bursary, Seinet-Spaulding was also credited with one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Archibald, a 6-foot-3, 238-pound defensive end, had 27 tackles in eight contests, including 19 solos. He ranked third among league leaders with 9.5 tackles for losses (totaling 46 yards) and was third in QB sacks with 5.5. The 22-year-old economics junior was a terror on the field, racking up four forced fumbles and four knockdowns.
Valcourt, a 5-foot-10, 188-pound cornerback, registered 22.5 tackles, including 20 solos, in eight games. The 21-year-old industrial relations junior ranked second among league leaders in passes defended, with six knockdowns.
