MONTREAL --
Peter Smith of the McGill University
Martlets is on the verge of becoming the third head coach in Canadian university women's hockey history to reach the 500 win plateau.
Smith, a native of
Lachine, Que., who is in his
19th season behind the McGill bench, will get his first crack to reach that milestone tonight (Thursday, Nov. 22) when fourth-ranked McGill (6-1) plays host to the No.1 ranked Montreal
Carabins (6-2) at McConnell Arena. The opening
faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Tickets are available both
online and at the door. General admission is $10, while students, seniors and McGill staff cost only $5. Children 12-and-under are admitted free.
The game will also be streamed on
McGill Sports Network, with live stats available on the
RSEQ women's hockey stats site.
Smith, who served as an assistant coach for Canada at the Vancouver Olympics, has guided the
Martlets to a record of 499-208-33 in 740 games overall (.697) behind the McGill bench. In regular season play, he owns a 257-56-11 record in 324 contests (.810).
The only others with more victories are current Alberta Pandas coach
Howie Draper (567-147-11) and former Concordia Stingers bench boss
Les Lawton (626-392-75).
An eight-time recipient of the Quebec university coach-of-the-year
honours (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014), Smith is also a three-time U SPORTS coach of the year, winning the award in 2012 and 2008, in addition to sharing the
honours in 2003 with Lisa MacDonald of St. Mary's.
