Ryan Thorne

(updated June 25, 2023)

Ryan Thorne enters his fourth year and third season in 2023-24 with a 24-23 record overall including an 18-10 mark in regular season play as head coach of the McGill University men's basketball team.  Since, 2022, he has also served as an assistant coach with the Canadian Elite Basketball League's Montreal Alliance. Thorne was named RSEQ men's basketball coach of the year in 2021-22 after guiding the Redbirds to a perfect record in league play, the conference championship and a berth at the U SPORTS Final 8, where McGill finished tied for seventh.

Thorne was appointed to the post in June, 2020, replacing David DeAveiro, who stepped down after a decade at McGill to accept the coaching position at Ryerson (now known as TMU).

Born 1971 in Barbados and raised in the Montreal suburbs of LaSalle and Pierrefonds, Thorne, 51, is currently a long-time resident of Ile-Bizard, Que. Prior to taking over the men's team, he had served the previous 17 seasons as head coach of the McGill women's program and guided the Martlets to seven Quebec league titles and their first national championship in 2017.  He was named U SPORTS women's basketball coach of the year in 2016 and is a six-time recipient of the RSEQ university women's coach-of-the-year award.

Thorne led the Martlets to more wins than any other hoops coach in school history, posting a 277-221 overall record (.565) in 498 career games behind the Martlets bench. Over the past 10 years, he guided the Martlets to six first-place finishes and an unprecedented seven consecutive RSEQ league banners (from 2012 to 2018). In the Quebec conference, he owns a 153-119 regular season mark in addition to a 26-17 record in post-season play. In seven appearances at the Final Eight national championship, his Martlets registered a 12-9 record, winning gold in 2017 and silver in 2015.

Thorne is among five bench bosses in Canadian women’s basketball to win a U SPORTS national championship as both a coach and a player. Others to accomplish that feat include Victoria’s Kathy Williams-Shields, Toronto’s Michele Bélanger, Regina’s Christine Stapleton and McMaster’s Theresa Burns

Thorne, who was president of the Canadian University Women's Basketball Association, served with the Canada Basketball Women's High Performance program for five years, including a stint as an assistant with the 2015 senior development team that won silver in South Korea and the junior program -- from 2016 to 2019 – which won silver in Chile (2016), bronze in Italy (2017) and silver in Mexico (2018).

Thorne holds his Level III certification and earned his coaching stripes as an assistant for two years under bench boss Lisen Moore with the Martlets before being elevated to head coach in September, 2003. He was appointed full-time at McGill in 2006 and also served as a basketball instructor in the McGill department of kinesiology and physical education.

Thorne has been on the board of directors for the West Island Black Community Associations (Youth & Recreations committee) and launched a summer basketball program in LaSalle. Using his platform at McGill, Thorne created the first annual Black History Month Game, raising funds to assist black youth with the financial burden of university studies in Canada.

During his playing days, Thorne had a stellar career, initially at Argyle Academy in Verdun, Que., followed by John Abbott College, where he was team captain and most valuable player.

At Bishop's, he was team captain and MVP, guiding the Gaiters to a national championship in 1997-98 before graduating in 1999 with a bachelor's degree, majoring in economics. A three-time conference all-star in the Quebec league, Thorne earned honorable mention in the 1998-99 all-Canadian voting and was named as the University's male athlete of the year.

Thorne, whose brother Adrian played football at the University of Waterloo, is the father of one son (Brooklyn) and two daughters (Asia and Sienna).
