MONTREAL – Two members of the McGill University women's soccer coaching staff guided Quebec to a 1-0 overtime victory over Ontario to capture gold at the Canada Summer Games at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg, Thursday.
It was Quebec's first ever women's soccer title at the event since the sport's first appearance at the 1993 Games in Kamloops, B.C.
Jessica Silva served as head coach for Team Quebec, accompanied by fellow McGill Martlets assistant coach
Patrick Viollat. A third McGill coach,
Kelsey Wilson, also helped the provincial team in training camp at Percival Molson Stadium on the McGill campus prior to the Games but did not accompany the team to Manitoba.
Captain
Marika Guay, a 17-year-old native of Chateauguay, Que., scored the game-winning tally in the extra session.
The Quebec squad outscored their opponents 25-0 in five games. They defeated Yukon (9-0) and Saskatchewan (3-0) in the preliminary round, followed by medal round victories over PEI (7-0), Nova Scotia (5-0) and Ontario (1-0).
Now that the women's tournament has concluded, the men's tourney begins with McGill assistant coach
Alex Salvoni, serving as bench boss as the Quebec provincial squad, looks to match the women's achievement.
The Canada Games is a high-level multi-sport event with a national artists program held every two years, alternating between the Winter Games and the Summer Games
