Dr. Jack McMullan in 1956 (left), 1957 and 1969

MONTREAL -- McGill Athletics & Recreation is saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Jack McMullan, who quarterbacked the Redmen football team and captained the men's hockey team in 1956-57, the year that McConnell Arena opened. He passed away on March 21 at the West Island Palliative Care Residence and was 84.

Born John Francis McMullan in Montreal on July 15, 1932, "Jack" graduated with an arts degree from Loyola College in 1953, then transferred to McGill, where he earned a dentistry degree in 1957, served as the dentistry class president in his senior year and went on to practice for 50 years. A gifted athlete who also excelled at baseball and golf, he played with the football Redmen during his freshman year in 1953, then joined the hockey Redmen, where he skated from 1954 to 1957.

Arguably among Loyola's greatest all-round athletes, he was inducted to the Loyola Sports Hall of Fame in 1969. McMullan captained both the hockey and football teams at that institution, where he starred at quarterback and won the Sportsmanship Trophy in 1953. His unique induction inscription noted that he "had natural ability, a desire to excel and a willingness to listen and learn."

In the 1957 Old McGill yearbook, his grad photo included the following hand-picked expression: "Those who expose their learning to the ignorant, expose their ignorance to the learned."

McMullan had a championship-studded career ranging all the way back to the bantam level and was reported to have rejected a spring tryout offer from baseball's Cleveland Indians.

A man of great character, he took pride in carrying out his responsibilities with compassion and integrity. He will be remembered for his love of family, his faith, his unpretentiousness, humility, unfailing kindness and loyalty.

Predeceased by his first wife Maureen, he is mourned by son Jay, daughter Kelly, sister Dolores, brothers Brian and Emmett, his wife Thelma Drury, many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Visitation will be held on Sunday March 27, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Collins-Clarke- MacGillivray-White funeral home, 222 Autoroute 20, Pointe-Claire, Que.  A funeral mass will be held on Monday, March 28, 11:00 a.m. at St. John Fisher Parish, 120 Summerhill, Pointe Claire, Que. Donations to West Island Palliative Care Residence in Jack's memory would be greatly appreciated.
