Hockey Redmen add another sniper to their arsenal as team prepares for weekend invasion of Gryphons and Mustangs

Jerome Verrier

MONTREAL -- The McGill University men's hockey team have added another sniper to their arsenal with the addition of forward Jerome Verrier to the roster.

The six-foot, 192-pound native of Drummondville, Que., was recruited by McGill head coach Kelly Nobes last year but opted for a pro try-out at the Detroit Red Wings rookie camp last September, where he suffered an injury after a collision with Darren Helm. He has been rehabilitating throughout the fall semester and began practicing with the Redmen in early January. It is undetermined when he will suit up for his first CIS game.

A 21-year-old physical education freshman, Verrier starred for the Quebec Remparts and Drummondville Voltigeurs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2011 to 2015, where he tallied 191 points, including 92 goals in 242 regular season games. He added a 12-23-35 record in 40 playoff contests. At the 2015 Memorial Cup tournament, Verrier notched a pair of goals in a tiebreaker between Rimouski and Quebec to help the Remparts advance.

The addition of Verrier means that 22 of the 26 players on the McGill roster have played major junior hockey, including 18 from the QMJHL and four from the OHL.

The Redmen are ranked No.3 in the CIS national rankings with an 18-3-1 record in the OUA East and have the fifth-best offence in the country with an average of 4.36 goals per game.

McGill, which has six games remaining before playoffs, will host two of the top teams from the OUA West division this weekend. The Guelph Gryphons (12-8-0) play at McConnell Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. and the No.10 Western Mustangs (13-8-0) will confront the Redmen on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The game versus Western is billed as a "Hockey NIght at McGill" promotion. All friends and family of McGill staff are invited to a pre-game family skate with Redmen players from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., followed by the Redmen game. A $10 family pass includes the pre-game skate and game tickets for the whole family. Advance tickets can be reserved by calling the Redbird Sports Shop at 514-398-1539.
